Luton gets a lot of stick. Voted ‘the worst place to live in the UK’ in 2023, most people either know it for that unfortunate accolade or for the football stand built into a housing estate that’s sponsored by Dominos.
Here at Pub Sessions, we wanted to find out what Luton was really like. Nestle in its underbelly. Poke the proverbial bear. Sink our teeth into it etc etc.
Our journey to the first pub of the evening took us through a semi-abandoned shopping centre, past a bloke having a barney with several traffic wardens over the location in which he’d parked his white van and out via an underpass into ‘New Town’, situated to the south of the town centre.
We took refuge in Alfie’s Bar and instantly felt at home. Literally at home. It felt like you were in someone’s gaff. Delightful place. Guinness’ poured and odd looks from a couple of locals taken, we wandered outside to the garden which had a fantastic array of furniture that looked like it had been ripped from an 80’s office.
The pub itself was adorned with a lot of American signage and number plates (particularly enjoyed ‘FUHGEDABOUDIT’’) and also sported a very vibrant looking toilet facility. Although both taps and hand drier were ‘out of order’ on our visit.
We received a warm welcome here and loved it so much we stayed for an extra pint but quickly slurped them down as we had a list as long as my arm of watering holes to frequent. Onwards…
