A short trip up the high street and we saw a glimpse of the infamous General Havelock. Having raised eyebrows and got tongues wagging in the previous pubs, we could taste the anticipation. The lights were on, which calmed our worries that this grand pub was going to be closed.
There were two people sat at the bar and a lady stood behind it, gesturing with a nod of her head to say silently “What can I get ya?”. She seemed a tough nut to crack, but after our first round she had warmed to us.
TVs showing the football, a fancy jukebox, pool table and darts were available. Our new friend behind the bar, fetched us some darts and we played some killer.
Whilst signs around the bar (no glasses on Friday or Saturday night, etc) indicated there may have been some truth to the rumours of the pubs reputation, we experienced nothing but accommodation. As is often the case fear of the unknown drives a lot of that sort of chat, yet in our 6 years of sessions going in and out of local Freehouses across London we’ve never had any trouble anywhere.
Conway’s old school friend was in London for the evening and joined us in the General Havelock. He was staying in Acton and made the long journey across the capital for the occasion.
We had one final pub on our list so we bid farewell and got on our way.
