Canterbury Arms. They re-opened when we knocked on and meant the most pints in a mid week sessions ever! But will they get into the Xmas special though?!...Of course they will.

Next we strolled past the Walworth Royal British Legion club but as we expected it was shut. Never to fear we had an old favourite up next so after weaving through some estates we popped out on Maddox Way at The Canterbury Arms. First visited in 2017 where the pub won our Silver Award (see final pic) we were frothing to get back in there and see what a post covid Canterbury Arms looked like. The lady who had previously taken our award wasn’t there but the locals recall she was Tommy’s daughter. The place was busier than our last visit and a local was ensuring the jukebox kept rolling. No sooner had we got our first round than the lady behind the bar shouted over “There’s 7 lasagnes left if you’re hungry boys”. Music to our ears. We put in the order and kept the cats and dogs of the pub entertained.

A another lady who was sat at the bar leapt into action furnishing our table with cutlery wrapped in cloth napkins and condiments before the generously portioned lasagnes appeared - what a touch.

This place had it all, it was better than our previous visit so hard to see how we won’t be back here at the end of the year.

No kids after 7pm and Oster (Hoister) season was declared over, though the landlady did say if you come down on Saturdays you can still find decently priced meat for sale. They told us a hoister was someone who sells knock off gear, not a terminalogy we were familiar with but shame the seasons over. We did buy some sunglasses off a fella the first time we were in there so the dots were being connected.

Can’t really describe how fantastic this place is, seriously get down there, they’re just starting sunday roasts and the atmosphere is cracking. Many of the locals in there lived in the tower above it and were singing the pubs praises. We did not want to leave and were very comfortable in the window seat with full stomachs though we had our duties to fulfil so onward we marched.

Taking Silver Award this year, in a repeat of the 2017 result, it was the unfaltering Canterbury Arms. With familiar faces at the bar we had two pints and a jolly time with all in attendance. Long may the Canterbury Arms remain. 🍻
